AFRICAN FASHION IN THE HERITAGE MONTH

“Heritage is defined as "that which we inherit”

Nelson Mandela created the “Heritage Day” day on 1994 as a powerful agent for promulgating a South African identity, fostering reconciliation and promoting the notion that diversity is a national asset as opposed to igniting conflict.
So during “Heritage Month”, South Africa and Johannesburg explode with colors, textures and smiles. I am both fascinated and hypnotized by the Africans wearing their traditional dresses. It feels like I am seeing an entirely new manifestation of art and creativity but on the streets!
This is a compilation of people, mainly women, that I have seen around … something interesting that I couldn’t keep only to myself and I wanted to share.

The ladies above are police women, they went to work with their traditional dresses and I found this wonderful.

Beads are a very important part of African culture, all their accessories are made with colorful miniature stones, creating magnificent pieces that compliment their outfits beautifully.

If they are wearing a crown made by beads and a shorter skirt, it means that they are still single. If they are wearing a hat and longer skirt, it means that they are married. They cover their shoulders as a symbol of respect.

She is wearing a traditional weeding Zulu dress, Isn’t it so beautiful?
